When I was in high school there was a group of students who sat at the back of class. These students were led by sandy haired joker who ironically, was named Sandy. They invariably had bad grades and caused disruption to the rest of the class. I recall one day that they all scored miserably on a test, but the lowest score was Sandy’s. The teacher chastised them as they sat at the back of the classroom giggling. Exasperated the instructor walked to the back and putting his hands on either side of the desktop, he leaned across the front and stopped about 6 in. in front of Sandy. He said in a very measured tone, “Well someone has to be last, why shouldn’t it be you?” Everyone became still in the face that gnomic pronouncement. I wasn’t sure what he meant by that, I didn’t really get it. But sandy did, he seem to change after that, it wasn’t an immediate change, it happened over the next semester. He stopped joking around in the back of the class, and although he never made it to the front, he did make it to the center.
